Qualifications and Disqualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be a United States citizen or legal permanent resident who is lawfully present in the United States pursuant to Federal Law and § 24-76.5-103, C.R.S.
  • At least 18 years of age for most Civilian Positions, 21 for Commissioned.
  • High school graduate or G.E.D.
  • Possess Colorado Driver’s License at time of employment.
  • Ability to pass various qualifying exams and intensive background investigations.
  • Ability to pass polygraph, psychological, and medical exams.
  • Commissioned applicants must possess a certificate of completion from a P.O.S.T. recognized basic academy or fulfill requirements under P.O.S.T. Must have current P.O.S.T certification from State of Colorado. No provisional P.O.S.T. certifications accepted at this time.
  • Specific jobs may require further education and/or experience. See qualification details under job descriptions.
DISQUALIFICATIONS
  • Denial, revocation, or suspension of POST certification. Circumstances surrounding the denial, revocation or suspension shall be reviewed by the Professional Standards Division Chief. CLICK HERE to view more information on Disqualifying Incidents from the Colorado POST.
  • Intentional omissions or falsifications regarding any question contained in the employment application.
  • A court martial resulting in dismissal from military service in the past five years.
  • Conviction of a felony offense.
  • Illegal distribution or manufacturing of a controlled substance for profit.
  • Illegal possession or use of marijuana within the past one year for commissioned staff to include cadet (possession or use while under 18 years of age accepted, unless within the past year). Civilian staff must be able to pass a drug screen.
  • Use of any illegal drugs in the last three years (except marijuana).
  • Refusal to consent or submit to a test for controlled substances and/or alcohol use for the hiring process.
  • Eluding a law enforcement officer at age 18 or older.
  • Driver’s license suspension / revocation / denial in the past five years not including Toll generated suspensions.
  • Two or more traffic convictions (6 points or more each) in the past five years.
  • Three or more ‘at fault’ motor vehicle accidents in the past three years.
  • Conviction of DUI / DWAI / DUID in the past five years.
  • More than one conviction for DUI / DWAI / DUID.
  • Falsification of any official document.
  • Testifying falsely under oath in court.
  • Knowingly offered, solicited, or accepted a bribe.
  • More than 1 sustained complaint and/or any suspension for excessive use of force.
  • Any unlawful sexual contact involving a child.
  • Child abuse.
  • Any conviction for domestic abuse (including deferred sentences in which a guilty plea or nolo contendere was entered). Refer to Colorado POST disqualifications.
