Application Submitted
We choose individuals whose qualifications most closely meet our needs. Please complete your application as thoroughly as possible. Please review the disqualifications prior to submitting your application.
Application Received & Reviewed by Hiring Unit
The Hiring Unit is reviewing applications every business day. You will be notified via email that we have received your application and that it is in the process of review. You will be contacted via email if your application is approved and you have been invited to proceed in our process.
Obstacle Course Testing (Deputy Applicants ONLY)
Multiple deputy tests occur throughout the calendar year. Once your application is approved, you will be invited to the next scheduled test date. The testing will take place at our Highlands Ranch Law Enforcement Training Facility. Applicants must pass the obstacle course in 96 seconds.
Written Exam (Job Specific)
The written exam is a 4-part timed general education test that focuses on spelling, punctuation, grammar, math, and writing. You must pass each section of this exam with a 70% or better score.
Personal History Questionnaire
You will then receive our Personal History Questionnaire which includes your work history, education, residential history, personal references, etc. You will be required to submit documents to include but not limited to: driver’s license, birth certificate, social security card and high school diploma.
Integrity Interview
An integrity interview is a one-on-one interview with our Hiring Unit to verify the accuracy of the information included in your application and your Personal History Questionnaire.
Polygraph Exam
We use a third-party vendor to conduct our exams and they take approximately an hour and a half hour. The exam is an investigative tool and is used in conjunction with other investigative tools in making our hiring decisions.
Pre-Conditional Psychological Exam
We use a third-party vendor to conduct our exams and they take approximately three hours. The exam is used to assess the psychological fitness for employment with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
Conditional Offer
Once you have passed the previous steps you will be given a conditional offer based on your years of experience. *include link to Tier plan. Lateral candidates (deputies/dispatchers) will receive one for one for every year of law enforcement/dispatching experience. For non-essential applicants we will take your applicable experience into consideration.
Post-Conditional Psychological Exam
This exam indicates the applicant’s ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
Medical Exam
We use a third-party vendor to conduct our exams and they take approximately one hour. Medical tests vary by position; however, each applicant will be given a drug test, TB test, vision and hearing test.
Background Investigation
Our Hiring Unit is now contacting your former employers as well as your references. The background investigation will also be verifying your criminal history, education, and residential history, etc. This takes approximately 4-6 weeks to complete.
Sheriff's Interview
Once your background investigation report has been approved through the chain of command, you will be contacted to schedule your Sheriff’s interview with either the Sheriff, Undersheriff, or a Chief Deputy.
